an obelus (†) is a typographical mark that usually indicates a footnote if an asterisk has already been used. The symbol is also used to indicate death (of people) or extinction (of species or languages). Specifically, the obelus was originally used in the Hellenistic period to mark questionable or corrupt words or passages in manuscripts of the Homeric epics: while the asterisk was used for corrective additions, the obelus was used for corrective deletions of invalid reconstructions, following non-attested words or sections reconstructed for the sake of argument only, implying that the commentator did not believe such a word or section had ever existed. Whatever followed the obelus, basically, was a comment on the actual matter, meant to skim through the noise.
Obelus is partly made possible by the generous support of the Kemmler Foundation.
